I would agree with you about the pronunciation, it is also how the term is used. When used in the black, among other people (and I say people as in the orientation of how you grew up, I know white people who can say black and understand how to use it and are accepted to use it in that form). When you use the black it is distinctly meant as derogatory. For instance, as a person who deals with rap artists, I can walk in to a room with rappers, black and white, and say "Thats my black right there" I would not say thats my black". It depends on ones orientation to the word. As far as condemnation, that is for scholars and social conscientious people to debate. Most of the people I know, who are admittedly poorer, do not worry about the use of the term black, but would take offense at the use of the term black. Me personally, I've been with white females who would never say it and who would like to say it to add to the situation. But that is for that moment in time.....

It really depends on your orientation to the word and which world you live in.
